Visiting Hampden Park on Match Day
Hampden Park is Scotland's national stadium — home of the Scottish Cup Final, the League Cup Final, and Scotland international matches. With a capacity of over 51,000, a match at Hampden is a different experience from a club ground.
What matches are played at Hampden?
- Scotland internationals: Home qualifiers for the World Cup and European Championship, plus Nations League fixtures. Scotland's home matches are among the most atmospheric occasions in Scottish football.
- Scottish Cup Final: The culmination of the world's oldest national cup competition, held at Hampden each May. One of the great occasions in Scottish football.
- Scottish League Cup Final: Held at Hampden in late November or early December. A major occasion drawing supporters of the two finalists from across Scotland.
Queens Park FC — the world's oldest amateur football club, founded in 1867 — also use Hampden as their home ground and play in the Scottish Championship.
Getting tickets
Tickets for Scotland international matches are available through the Scottish FA website at scottishfa.co.uk. Scotland matches are popular and sell out quickly — particularly for major qualifying fixtures. Register for the Scottish FA's ticketing system in advance.
Scottish Cup Final and League Cup Final tickets are allocated to the two competing clubs, who distribute them to their supporters. If your club reaches a final, tickets are available through the club's official ticketing system.
Queens Park FC fixtures are available directly from the club and rarely sell out.
Getting to Hampden Park
Hampden Park is at Letherby Drive, Mount Florida, Glasgow G42 9BA.
- By train (recommended): Mount Florida station on the Cathcart Circle Line is a 5-minute walk from the stadium. Trains run regularly from Glasgow Central — around 10 minutes. On major match days, ScotRail runs additional services.
- By bus: The 5, 31, and 37 services stop near the stadium from the city centre.
- By car: Free parking is available on site via Carmunnock Road or Aikenhead Road. Arrive early on major match days — it fills up. Disabled parking and EV charging are available.
- By taxi: Around £8–12 from the city centre, 15 minutes.
Before the match — pubs near Hampden
The Mount Florida area around Hampden has several pubs worth knowing about on match days.
- Clockwork Beer Co: Cathcart Road, about 10 minutes' walk from the stadium. One of Glasgow's best craft beer pubs, less busy than the pubs immediately around the ground.
- The Mount Florida Bar: Close to the stadium, fills up quickly on big match days. A traditional local pub with a good atmosphere.
- The Victoria Bar: Victoria Road, slightly further from the ground but worth the walk. Good food and a more relaxed atmosphere than the match day pubs.
For major finals, many supporters head to the city centre before travelling to Hampden — Buchanan Street and the surrounding area have plenty of options for pre-match drinks.
What to expect on arrival
Gates open approximately 90 minutes before kick-off. On major match days — Scottish Cup Finals and Scotland internationals — the area around Mount Florida station gets very busy in the hour before kick-off. Allow extra time.
Security checks at Hampden are thorough on major occasions. Don't bring large bags. The stadium operates a strict prohibited items policy — check the Scottish FA website before you travel.
Hampden is an all-seater stadium. The four stands — North, South, East, and West — are clearly signposted. Check your ticket carefully for the correct entrance.
The atmosphere inside
The atmosphere at Hampden depends heavily on the fixture. A Scotland international against a major opponent — Germany, England, France — generates one of the most intense atmospheres in British football. The Tartan Army, Scotland's supporter group, is renowned internationally for its noise and good humour.
Scottish Cup Finals bring together supporters of two clubs who may rarely meet during the season. The atmosphere is festive and loud, though different in character from an Old Firm match.
The famous Hampden Roar — the noise generated by over 100,000 supporters at the ground's peak capacity — is the stuff of legend. At 51,000, the modern stadium is quieter, but on the right occasion it remains an exceptional experience.
After the match
Mount Florida station gets extremely busy after major matches. Expect queues for 30–45 minutes after the final whistle on Scottish Cup Final and international days. Walking to King's Park station (10 minutes further) is a useful alternative on busy days.
If driving, expect delays leaving the car park on major match days. Building in 45–60 minutes after the final whistle is advisable.
Can't make a match? Book a stadium tour
The Hampden Park stadium tour and Scottish Football Museum is available on non-match days and gives behind-the-scenes access to the dressing rooms, tunnel, Hampden Hotshots gallery, and pitchside — plus the full Scottish Football Museum, home to the world's oldest national football trophy.
