About Hearts and Tynecastle
Heart of Midlothian — Hearts — were founded in 1874, making them one of the oldest football clubs in Scotland. The club takes its name from a mosaic in the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's Old Town, which marks the site of the old city heart.
Tynecastle is compact, steep, and loud. The main stand runs close to the pitch, giving the ground an intimate intensity that larger, more modern stadiums lack. Away fans consistently describe it as one of the most intimidating grounds in Scottish football.
Hearts have a moving war memorial story. During the First World War, the entire first-team squad enlisted in what became known as McCrae's Battalion. Sixteen players died in the conflict, more than any other British football club. A memorial inside the ground honours them, and the story is told in detail on the stadium tour.
The stadium tour
The Tynecastle stadium tour gives access to areas of the ground closed on match days — the home and away dressing rooms, the players' tunnel, the dugouts and pitchside, and the club's extensive trophy and memorabilia collection including items relating to the club's First World War story.
Tours are led by knowledgeable guides and must be booked in advance. Check the Hearts FC official website for current availability, pricing, and dates — tours run on non-match days only.

Is the Tynecastle tour worth it?
Yes — particularly for visitors with an interest in football history beyond the game itself. The First World War story is genuinely moving, and the compact nature of Tynecastle gives the tour a different character from the larger stadiums in Glasgow.
Combining Tynecastle with Easter Road
Both Edinburgh stadiums are worth visiting on the same day. Easter Road — home of Hibernian — is on the opposite side of the city in Leith, about 25 minutes by bus or 15 minutes by taxi.
